We are now accepting articles for our first print journal of 2024/25: “Rites of Passage“!
This edition will explore the themes of censorship, the suppression of information, and subversive reactions to this. You’ll find the full brief and further details on how to submit your work below.
THE BRIEF
In 1909, French anthropologists Arnold van Gennep published Les Rites de Passage, which argued that stages of a man’s life were marked by rituals, or “rites of passage.” For example, the knighting of a young nobleman; a WWI solider’s enlisting in the army; for many women of the past, marriage and childbirth.
We invite you to reflect upon, respond to, and even challenge the notion of a universal rites of passage. Where do women fit into this model? Or members of sexual minorities? How about histories outside of the western world?
We welcome any interpretation of the theme that considers history, classics or archaeology in relation to human life stages.

Submission of a pitch is optional but will allow you to receive some feedback from our Copy Editors to help inform your final article. These should be no more than 200 words and provide an outline of what you intend to discuss and how it fits the theme.
