Whether you want to share your writing with over 10,000 monthly readers, be a part of the editing process to create the best possible articles, or produce artwork for our exciting print journals, apply now to be a part of Edinburgh University’s student-led history, classics and archaeology journal. If you have a passion for the past, then we’d love to hear from you!
We’re currently recruiting Columnists, Junior Columnists, Copy Editors, and Illustrators, and you’ll find more information on what each of these roles involves below. If you’re interested in any of these positions, all you need to do is a send a 200-word email to firstname.lastname@example.org outlining why you’d like to be involved.
Columnists are our team of writers who produce content for publication on our website. As a Columnist, you’ll submit a piece once a fortnight in the form of an academic article, feature, interview, review, or historical fiction. You’re free to write about whatever you’d like within the scope of history, classics and/or archaeology, so this is a great opportunity to channel your interests and expand your writing skills. Your work will be proofread by our Copy Editors, and you’ll receive support and guidance through constructive feedback.
Junior Columnists are first-year students who are new to Retrospect. Like Columnists, you’ll produce content for publication on our website but on a monthly rather than fortnightly basis. This is an opportunity to expand your skills and ease you into the writing process. First-year students are welcome to apply for either a Columnist or Junior Columnist position.
Copy Editors are responsible for proofreading and editing the work submitted by our Columnists for online and print publication. Using our Editors Guide, you’ll ensure work is published to a high standard, checking grammar, spelling, and providing constructive feedback where necessary. You’ll also be invited to our editing days to prepare our print journals each semester.
Illustrators produce artwork for our print journals each semester. You’ll receive pitches in advance of the final article to help you bring our journal to life. You’ll also have the opportunity to produce additional illustrations throughout the semester for our online submissions. We encourage creativity and welcome a range of styles. If you have an online portfolio or examples of your work, we’d love for you to include them in your application.
