Retrospect is Recruiting!

Retrospect is Recruiting!

Interested in being a part of the University’s History, Classics, and Archaeology Journal? We have a variety of roles open for this year, and all you need to do to apply is write us a 200-word email! Let us know what role you are applying for and why you would like to be a part of Retrospect at informationretro@gmail.com.

This year we are taking applications for Columnists, Junior Columnists, Copy Editors, Podcast Assistants, and Illustrators.

ROLES:

Columnists are Retrospect Journal’s dedicated team of writers. You’ll be submitting one article/piece fortnightly on any topic, so long as its related to history, classics, or archaeology, through the academic year. Your piece can take any form, whether that be academic contributions, reviews, or historical fiction! This is a great opportunity to expand your writing skills and our editorial team will offer support and guidance throughout.

Junior Columnists is an option for first year students new to Retrospect. You’ll be submitting articles monthly to ease you into the writing process. This is a great opportunity to learn from your peers and develop your writing skills.

Copy Editors read through submissions and ensure they are ready for publication, editing grammar, sentence structure, and working with authors to produce the best piece possible. Copy Editors work on both online and print articles, with the Senior Team hosting an editing day each Semester to prepare for print publication.

Podcast Assistants is a NEW role for this year! Working under our Podcast Editor Sofia Parkinson Klimaschewski you will be helping research, script, record, and edit Retrospect’s Podcast. This is a great opportunity to explore a new medium of academia and practice your technical skills.

Illustrators have the task of creating artwork for our print editions. Given pitches a month and a half before the deadline, you will be working as a team to bring our articles to life! This year you will also have the chance to illustrate online articles throughout the term, collaborating with columnists to offer a new and improved reading experience.

How do I apply?

If you’re interested in applying for any role send us a 200-word application outlining a bit about yourself and why you’re suited to the role. If you are applying for the position of illustrator please also send in a few examples of your work. If you have any specific research interests, state these too but don’t worry if you’re still working those out. Make sure you state whether you’d like to be a columnist, junior columnist, copy editor, or podcast assistant!

When is the application deadline?

All applications need to be in by midday on Monday 27th September.

Who can apply?

Applications are open to any University of Edinburgh student! Not a History, Classics, or Archaeology student? That’s perfectly ok. We accept applications from anybody with an interest in the past.

I’m interested in being involved, but unsure that I can commit to a full committee role?

If you don’t think a fully active role is for you, feel free to join our society via this link: https://www.eusa.ed.ac.uk/…/societies/society/retrospect/. Student membership is £5 and non-student membership is £8. Membership will allow you to submit pieces for our website and print journal throughout the year.
